Matthew cut his teeth in Athens, Georgia during the peak of the ‘90s DIY movement, frequently playing house shows at the legendary Landfill as well as the hallowed 40 Watt Club, opening for the likes of Blonde Redhead, The Warmers, and others. After a stint in NYC, he relocated to Minneapolis and embarked upon a decade-long sonic exploration of everyday sounds and field recordings as Surface Hoar.  Eventually he returned to instrumentation as the sole member of recording project Devouring Youth before forming Atomic Energy Commission with David Foley in 2018. He is an audio engineer, sound designer, producer, and visual artist. As a live engineer, Matthew has mixed the likes of Grant Hart and Greg Norton of Hüsker Dü, Alan Sparhawk and Low, John Doe of X, Venus de Mars, Charlie Parr, Jill Sobule (RIP!), Dale Watson, Suzi Quatro, Dan Baird of the Georgia Satellites, Wesley Stace, members of Soul Asylum, Jay Aston’s Gene Loves Jezebel, Twin Tribes, and Vision Video, in addition to countless other acts. Matthew has also published numerous short stories and novellas as well as music and film criticism.
